(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْعِلْمُ أفْضَلُ شَرَف" which translates to

Knowledge is the most excellent honour.

This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the significance and superiority of knowledge in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the understanding, awareness, and comprehension of various subjects and matters. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The term (most excellent) "أفْضَلُ" signifies the superiority and excellence of knowledge over other virtues and attributes. Finally, the word (honour) "شَرَف" refers to a position of dignity, respect, and nobility.

To understand the significance of knowledge in Islam, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and its elevated status. In Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah says, (Say,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

)

قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila, verse 11, Allah states, (Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees)

يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ

This verse indicates that Allah elevates the believers and those who possess knowledge to higher ranks and positions.

The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the immense value and significance of knowledge in Islam. Knowledge is not only a means of personal growth and development but also a means of attaining closeness to Allah and achieving success in both this world and the hereafter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge throughout his life. He was a beacon of knowledge and guidance for the Muslim ummah. His words in this Hadith serve as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and to recognize its superiority over other forms of honor and prestige.

The pursuit of knowledge leads to numerous positive outcomes and benefits. It enables individuals to understand the true essence of Islam, to differentiate between right and wrong, and to make informed decisions based on sound judgment. Knowledge empowers individuals to contribute positively to society, to solve problems, and to promote justice and equality.

Moreover, knowledge is a means of spiritual growth and enlightenment. It deepens our understanding of Allah's creation, His signs, and His wisdom. It allows us to reflect upon the beauty and intricacy of the universe, strengthening our faith and connection with our Creator.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the superiority and excellence of knowledge. It serves as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and to recognize its immense value in Islam. By seeking knowledge, we not only enhance our personal growth and development but also attain closeness to Allah and contribute positively to society. May Allah grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and may He bless us with the ability to apply it in our lives.
