أشْجَعُ النّاسِ مَنْ غَلَبَ الجَهْلَ بِالحِلْمِ۔
The most courageous of people is the one who defeats ignorance with forbearance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forbearance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
أشْجَعُ النّاسِ مَنْ غَلَبَ الجَهْلَ بِالحِلْمِ۔
This Hadith can be translated as:
The most courageous of people is the one who defeats ignorance with forbearance.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. (ashja'u) "أشْجَعُ" refers to the most courageous or bravest. (an-nas) "النّاسِ" means people or individuals. (man) "مَنْ" signifies whoever or the one who. (ghalaba) "غَلَبَ" means to defeat or overcome. (al-jahl) "الجَهْلَ" refers to ignorance. (bil-hilm) "بِالحِلْمِ" means with forbearance or patience.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Furqan, verse 63:
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.
This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to ignorance and harshness with peace and forbearance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 199, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
This verse encourages us to turn away from the ignorant, indicating that engaging in arguments or confrontations with them is not productive. Instead, we should focus on promoting goodness and righteousness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that true courage lies in overcoming ignorance through forbearance. It is easy to respond to ignorance with anger or aggression, but it takes great strength of character to remain calm and patient in the face of ignorance. By responding with forbearance, we can effectively address ignorance and promote understanding.
For example, imagine a situation where someone is spreading false information about Islam. The most courageous response would be to engage in a calm and respectful dialogue, providing accurate information and clarifying misconceptions. This approach not only defeats ignorance but also showcases the beauty and truth of Islam.
The motivation behind defeating ignorance with forbearance is rooted in the teachings of Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.
This verse highlights the importance of respecting others and refraining from ridiculing or insulting them.
The consequences of defeating ignorance with forbearance are far-reaching. By responding to ignorance with patience and wisdom, we can foster an environment of understanding, tolerance, and unity. Our actions can inspire others to seek knowledge, question their own biases, and overcome their own ignorance. This approach not only benefits individuals but also contributes to the betterment of society as a whole.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see the immense wisdom and guidance it offers. It teaches us that true courage is not found in aggression or confrontation, but rather in the ability to overcome ignorance with forbearance. By embodying this principle in our interactions with others, we can contribute to a more harmonious and enlightened society.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to defeat ignorance with forbearance, and may He bless us with the courage to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Ameen.
