ما قَسَمَ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ بَيْنَ عِبادِهِ شَيْئاً أفْضَلَ مِنَ العَقْلِ۔
Allah, the Glorified, has not apportioned anything among his servants better than intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and superiority of intellect in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (aql) "عَقْلِ" in Arabic refers to intellect or rationality. It is a divine gift bestowed upon human beings, enabling them to reason, understand, and make sound judgments.
The significance of intellect is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly calls upon Muslims to use their intellect and reflect upon His signs. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 164, Allah says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse encourages believers to ponder over the natural world and recognize the wisdom and design behind it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Rum, verse 22, Allah states,
And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed, in that are signs for those of knowledge.
Here, Allah draws attention to the diversity of languages and colors as signs for those who possess knowledge and understanding. This verse highlights the importance of intellect in recognizing and appreciating the beauty and wisdom in the diversity of creation.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) affirms that intellect is the most superior and valuable gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to His servants. It is through intellect that human beings are able to comprehend the teachings of Islam, differentiate between right and wrong, and make informed decisions. Intellect enables individuals to navigate through the complexities of life, seek knowledge, and develop a deep understanding of the divine message.
The consequences of neglecting or misusing intellect are also highlighted in the Quran. In Surah Al-A'raf, verse 179, Allah describes those who do not use their intellect as being like cattle, saying,
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
This verse serves as a warning against the dangers of disregarding the intellect and blindly following one's desires.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to prioritize the development and utilization of their intellect. By doing so, they can attain a deeper understanding of their faith, make wise choices, and contribute positively to society. Intellect is not only a means of acquiring knowledge but also a tool for critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the immense value and superiority of intellect in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It highlights the importance of using our intellect to reflect upon the signs of Allah in the world around us and to make informed decisions in accordance with the teachings of Islam. By nurturing and utilizing our intellect, we can strive to become better servants of Allah and contribute positively to our communities. May Allah grant us the ability to use our intellect wisely and seek knowledge that benefits us in this world and the hereafter.
