اَلصَّمْتُ وَقارٌ وسَلامَةٌ۔
Silence is dignity and safety.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Silence is dignity and safety.
This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the virtues of remaining silent in certain situations. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (silence) "صَّمْتُ" in this Hadith refers to refraining from speaking or expressing one's thoughts. It implies controlling one's tongue and restraining from unnecessary speech. The word (dignity) "وَقارٌ" signifies honor, respect, and nobility. It refers to the elevated status that a person attains through silence. Lastly, the word (safety) "سَلامَةٌ" denotes protection, security, and well-being. It highlights the idea that silence can safeguard an individual from harm or undesirable consequences.
The Quran provides us with several verses that support the concept of silence as a means of dignity and safety. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199),
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
This verse encourages Muslims to avoid engaging in futile arguments or debates with those who lack knowledge or understanding. By remaining silent in such situations, one preserves their dignity and avoids unnecessary conflict.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the believers as those who
turn away from vain talk.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding idle and meaningless speech. By refraining from engaging in gossip or frivolous conversations, one maintains their dignity and protects themselves from the negative consequences of such speech.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also reminds us of the wisdom found in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to be patient and maintain silence when faced with the ignorance and insults of others. This verse teaches us that silence can be a powerful tool in preserving our honor and protecting ourselves from harm.
Silence can also be a means of self-reflection and introspection. By choosing to remain silent, we give ourselves the opportunity to listen and learn from others. This humility allows us to gain knowledge and wisdom, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:50),
Say, 'I do not tell you that I possess the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.'
This verse reminds us that true knowledge comes from Allah, and by remaining silent and receptive, we can acquire wisdom and guidance.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the virtues of silence. It emphasizes that silence can bring dignity and safety to an individual. By controlling our speech and refraining from engaging in futile arguments or idle talk, we protect our honor, preserve our well-being, and open ourselves to the knowledge and wisdom that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon us. May Allah grant us the wisdom to practice silence when necessary and bless us with the virtues of dignity and safety.
