Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

لِلظَّالِمِ الْبَادِي غَداً بِكَفِّهِ عَضَّةٌ۔

This Hadith can be translated into English as:

He who takes the lead in oppression has to bite his hand (in repentance) tomorrow.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (dhālim) "ظَّالِمِ" refers to the oppressor, the one who transgresses the boundaries of justice and fairness. The word (al-bādī) "الْبَادِي" means the one who initiates or takes the lead in something. And the word (kaffihi) "كَفِّهِ" refers to his own hand.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 120:

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, 'Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.' If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.

This verse reminds us of the importance of following the guidance of Allah and His chosen representatives, rather than succumbing to the desires and opinions of others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate to the city of knowledge, possessed immense wisdom and understanding. His words in the Hadith highlight the consequences of oppression and the need for repentance.

The Hadith emphasizes that the oppressor, who takes the lead in committing injustice, will eventually face the consequences of their actions. Just as biting one's hand causes pain and regret, the oppressor will experience remorse and regret for their oppressive deeds. This serves as a powerful reminder that no one can escape the consequences of their actions, especially when they initiate oppression.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) further emphasizes the consequences of oppression in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 25:

And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse highlights that the consequences of oppression are not limited to this world alone. On the Day of Judgment, the oppressors will face the severe punishment of Allah. Their actions will be brought forth and they will be held accountable for the injustices they committed. This serves as a warning to Muslims to refrain from oppressing others and to seek justice and righteousness in all their dealings.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw several important lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the importance of justice and fairness in all aspects of our lives. As Muslims, we are obligated to stand against oppression and support the rights of the oppressed. Secondly, it serves as a reminder that no one is above accountability. Even if the oppressor may seem to be in a position of power and authority in this world, they will ultimately face the consequences of their actions.

Furthermore, this Hadith encourages us to reflect on our own actions and ensure that we do not become oppressors ourselves. It reminds us to be mindful of our words, actions, and intentions, and to always strive for justice and righteousness. By doing so, we can avoid the bitter regret and remorse that comes with oppression.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of oppression and the need for repentance. It highlights the importance of justice, accountability, and the ultimate justice of Allah. As Muslims, we should strive to follow the guidance of Allah and His chosen representatives, and to always uphold justice and fairness in our lives. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from oppression.
