Verily this world is the abode of truth for the one who believes it [to be transient], the abode of wellbeing for the one who recognizes it [as such], the abode of riches for the one who takes provisions from it [for the Hereafter] and the abode of good counsel for the one who takes advice from it. It has announced its separation and proclaimed its departure. It has declared its own [impending] death and [the death] of its inhabitants. It exemplifies for them, by its tribulations, the tribulation [of the Hereafter] and creates desire in them, by its pleasures, for the pleasures [of the Hereafter]. It brings ease in the evening and brings grief in the morning through desire, apprehension, alarm and warning. People dispraise it on the morning of their regret [on the Day of Reckoning] while others praise it. It reminded them [of the next life] so they remembered it. It related to them [things of the next life] and they believed. It admonished them and they took advice from it through [its] changes and lessons.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the nature of this world and the lessons it offers to those who seek the truth. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes the world as the abode of truth for those who believe in its transience. This means that those who recognize the temporary nature of this world and its fleeting pleasures will find the truth within it. The Quran supports this understanding in Surah Al-Hadeed, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (57:20)

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further describes this world as the abode of wellbeing for those who recognize it as such. This means that those who understand the temporary nature of this world and prioritize their spiritual and emotional wellbeing over material possessions will find true contentment. The Quran supports this understanding in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (16:97)

Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also describes this world as the abode of riches for those who take provisions from it for the Hereafter. This means that those who utilize the resources of this world to prepare for the eternal life will attain true wealth. The Quran supports this understanding in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (28:77)

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes this world as the abode of good counsel for those who take advice from it. This means that those who reflect upon the lessons and warnings of this world will find guidance and wisdom. The Quran supports this understanding in Surah Al-An'am, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (15:26-31)

And We have certainly created man from clay of altered black mud. And the jinn We created before from scorching fire. And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud. So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration.' So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely. Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that this world has announced its separation and proclaimed its departure. This means that the world is transient and will come to an end. It reminds us of the impermanence of worldly pleasures and the need to focus on the eternal life. The Quran supports this understanding in Surah Al-Qiyamah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (89:21-23)

No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - and your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, and brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that this world brings both ease and grief, desire and apprehension, alarm and warning. It is a place of trials and tribulations, meant to test and purify our souls. The Quran supports this understanding in Surah Al-Balad, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (90:4)

Certainly, We have created man into hardship

It is through these challenges that we learn and grow, and it is through the lessons of this world that we are reminded of the ultimate purpose of our existence.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides profound insights into the nature of this world and the lessons it offers. It reminds us to recognize the transience of worldly pleasures, prioritize our spiritual and emotional wellbeing, utilize the resources of this world for the Hereafter, and seek guidance from the lessons and warnings of this world. By understanding and internalizing these teachings, we can navigate the challenges of this world and strive for success in both this life and the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to comprehend these lessons and the strength to act upon them.
