(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

If you were to see benevolence in the form of a person, you would surely see him as a beautiful form that surpasses the worlds [in its beauty].

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali highlights the essence of true benevolence and its manifestation in a person's character.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ihsan) "إحْسانَ" refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses going above and beyond in one's actions, with sincerity and perfection. (shakhsan) "شَخْصاً" means a person, an individual. And (shaklan jamilan) "شَكْلاً جَميلاً" translates to a beautiful form.

To comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195:

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of performing acts of goodness and kindness. It encourages us to spend in the way of Allah, not only in terms of wealth but also in terms of our time, efforts, and abilities. By doing so, we attain a state of ihsan, where our actions are characterized by excellence and sincerity.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 93, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

There shall be no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten [in the past] if they [now] fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds, and then fear Allah and believe, and then fear Allah and do good; and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the significance of continuous acts of righteousness and goodness. It emphasizes that true believers are those who not only engage in good deeds but also fear Allah and strive to improve themselves. Such individuals are characterized by their commitment to ihsan and are beloved to Allah.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's Hadith. He states that if we were to witness benevolence personified, we would see it as a form of beauty that surpasses the worlds. This statement highlights the transformative power of ihsan and its impact on individuals and society as a whole.

When a person embodies ihsan, their actions and character radiate beauty and excellence. They become a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Their kindness, compassion, and selflessness transcend the boundaries of this world, leaving a lasting impact on those around them.

Imam Ali's statement serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for ihsan in all aspects of their lives. It encourages us to go beyond the minimum requirements and to excel in our actions, interactions, and relationships. By doing so, we not only beautify our own souls but also contribute to the betterment of society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of ihsan and its transformative power. It urges us to strive for excellence in our actions and character, so that we may become beacons of beauty and goodness in this world. May Allah guide us all on the path of ihsan and enable us to embody benevolence in all aspects of our lives.
