لاذُخْرَ كالْعِلْمِ۔
There is no provision like knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاذُخْرَ كالْعِلْمِ۔" This statement emphasizes the immense value and importance of knowledge. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (dhukhra) "ذُخْرَ" is derived from the root (dhakhara) "ذَخَرَ", which means provision or sustenance. It refers to something that is stored or accumulated for future use. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting that knowledge is the most valuable provision one can possess.
The word (ilm) "عِلْمِ" refers to knowledge. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. It includes knowledge of the Quran, Hadith, sciences, arts, and all forms of intellectual and spiritual understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing that knowledge is an invaluable asset that surpasses all other provisions.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of knowledge and its superiority over material possessions. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (39:9)
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that knowledge is a distinguishing factor that sets individuals apart.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (58:11)
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do
This verse highlights that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) elevates the believers and those who possess knowledge. It signifies the honor and status bestowed upon those who seek and acquire knowledge.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the immense value of knowledge. It encourages us to prioritize seeking knowledge and understanding in all aspects of our lives. Knowledge equips us with the tools to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom. His teachings and sayings continue to inspire and guide Muslims to this day. He was a beacon of knowledge, and his life serves as a testament to the importance of seeking knowledge and applying it in our daily lives.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge are evident in society. Ignorance leads to misunderstandings, divisions, and the spread of falsehood. Conversely, knowledge fosters unity, enlightenment, and the pursuit of truth. It empowers individuals to make informed choices and contribute positively to their communities.
As Muslims, we should strive to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and prioritize the acquisition of knowledge. We should seek knowledge from authentic sources, engage in critical thinking, and apply what we learn in our lives. By doing so, we can fulfill our duty as Muslims and contribute to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the unparalleled value of knowledge. It encourages us to seek knowledge, understand its significance, and apply it in our lives. By doing so, we can enrich our own lives and positively impact the world around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and benefit from it.
