اتَّقُوا مَعَاصِيَ اللهِ فِي الْخَلَوَاتِ، فَإِنَّ الشَّاهِدَ هُوَ الْحَاكِمُ۔
Beware of disobeying Allah in solitude, because the witness (of that situation) is also the judge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #324)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Beware of disobeying Allah in solitude, because the witness (of that situation) is also the judge.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining righteousness and avoiding sinful actions even when no one is watching.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (Ittaqoo) "اتَّقُوا" is derived from the root word (waqa) "وَقَى", which means to protect oneself or to be cautious. It carries the connotation of being conscious of Allah's presence and avoiding anything that displeases Him. The word (ma'asiya) "مَعَاصِيَ" refers to acts of disobedience or sins. It encompasses all actions that go against the commandments of Allah.
The phrase (fi al-khalawat) "فِي الْخَلَوَاتِ" refers to solitude or private moments when one is alone and believes that their actions are hidden from the sight of others. It is during these moments that one's true character is revealed, as there are no external influences or societal pressures to restrain them.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us to be cautious and mindful of our actions during these private moments because Allah is the ultimate witness and judge of our deeds. This means that even though we may think we are alone, Allah is fully aware of everything we do, and He will hold us accountable for our actions.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Mulk (67:13), Allah says,
And whether you conceal your speech or reveal it, indeed, He is Knowing of the innermost secrets.
This verse reminds us that Allah is fully aware of our hidden intentions and thoughts, even if we try to hide them from others.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:18), where Allah says,
Indeed, Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.
This verse emphasizes that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, including our private actions, and nothing is hidden from Him.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we realize that our actions in solitude have profound consequences. Engaging in sinful acts when we believe no one is watching can lead to a gradual erosion of our moral character and distance us from the path of righteousness. Conversely, maintaining piety and righteousness in private moments strengthens our faith and fosters a deeper connection with Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of self-discipline and self-accountability. By being conscious of Allah's presence at all times, we can strive to align our actions with His commandments, even when no one else is around to witness them.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions in solitude. It highlights the fact that Allah is the ultimate witness and judge of our deeds, and we will be held accountable for our actions, regardless of whether they are done in public or private. Let us strive to cultivate righteousness and avoid sinful acts, even when we believe we are alone, for Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, and He is the best judge of our actions. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and grant us the strength to resist temptation in every situation.
