The wastage of intellects is in seeking the superfluous.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Superfluous)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ضِياعُ العُقُولِ في طَلَبِ الفُضُولِ

which translates to

The wastage of intellects is in seeking the superfluous.

This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of utilizing our intellects wisely and avoiding the pursuit of unnecessary and frivolous matters.

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us first analyze the key words and their implications. The word (wastage) "ضِياعُ" refers to the loss or squandering of something valuable. In this context, it signifies the loss of intellect, which is a precious gift bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). (intellects) "العُقُولِ" refers to the faculty of reasoning and understanding that distinguishes humans from other creations. And (seeking the superfluous) "طَلَبِ الفُضُولِ" refers to the pursuit of unnecessary and trivial matters that do not contribute to our spiritual growth or benefit us in any meaningful way.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of utilizing our intellects wisely and avoiding wasteful pursuits. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179),

And certainly, We have created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle, rather they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

This verse highlights the consequences of neglecting the intellect and failing to use it for understanding and discernment. Those who do not utilize their intellects are likened to cattle, devoid of true understanding and guidance. They become lost in the pursuit of worldly desires, neglecting the higher purpose of their existence.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

This verse reminds us that the worldly pursuits and superfluous matters that we often become engrossed in are merely temporary distractions. Our true focus should be on the eternal life of the Hereafter, where our actions and the proper use of our intellects will determine our ultimate success or failure.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the use of their intellects in matters that hold true value and significance. It encourages us to reflect on our actions and intentions, ensuring that we do not waste our intellectual capacities on trivial pursuits that do not contribute to our spiritual growth or benefit us in the long run.

By avoiding the wastage of intellects, we can focus on seeking knowledge, understanding the teachings of Islam, and applying them in our lives. This will lead to personal growth, a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and a more meaningful and purposeful existence.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to utilize their intellects wisely and avoid the pursuit of superfluous matters. By doing so, we can lead a purposeful life, seeking knowledge, and striving for spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to make the best use of our intellects and guide us on the straight path.
