في كُلِّ اعْتِبار اِسْتِبْصارٌ۔
In every lesson that is drawn there is discernment.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
في كُلِّ اعْتِبار اِسْتِبْصارٌ۔
This can be translated into English as,
In every lesson that is drawn there is discernment.
Let us now delve into the deeper meanings of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The word (ittibar) "اعْتِبَار" in the Hadith refers to drawing lessons or deriving insights from a situation or experience. It implies the act of reflecting upon events and extracting wisdom from them. This process of ittibar enables individuals to gain discernment and understanding, allowing them to make informed decisions and navigate through life's challenges.
The word (istibsar) "اِسْتِبْصَار" in the Hadith means discernment or insight. It refers to the ability to perceive and comprehend the deeper meanings and implications of a situation. Istibsar involves looking beyond the surface level and delving into the underlying truths and wisdom that lie within.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of drawing lessons and seeking discernment. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse highlights the need for believers to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation and derive lessons from them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 42:30)
And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.
This verse reminds Muslims to reflect upon their own actions and take responsibility for the consequences that befall them. By doing so, they can gain insight into their own shortcomings and strive for self-improvement.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that every experience, whether positive or negative, holds valuable lessons for us. Through reflection and contemplation, we can discern the deeper meanings and wisdom behind these experiences. By doing so, we can make better choices, avoid repeating mistakes, and grow spiritually.
For example, if a person faces a financial loss, they can reflect upon the causes and consequences of their actions. They may realize that their extravagant spending habits led to their financial downfall. This realization can serve as a lesson, prompting them to adopt a more frugal and responsible approach to money management in the future.
Similarly, if a person experiences a personal betrayal, they can reflect upon the trust they placed in the wrong individuals. This reflection can lead to discernment, enabling them to be more cautious and selective in their relationships, and to prioritize trustworthiness and integrity.
The process of ittibar and istibsar not only helps individuals grow personally but also strengthens their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By reflecting upon the signs of Allah's creation and the consequences of their actions, believers can develop a deeper understanding of His wisdom and guidance. This understanding can inspire them to align their lives with His teachings and seek His forgiveness and mercy.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of drawing lessons and seeking discernment in every aspect of our lives. By reflecting upon our experiences, we can gain valuable insights and wisdom, enabling us to make better choices and grow spiritually. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to derive lessons from every situation and increase our discernment.
