اَلفِكْرُ يَهْدي إلَى الرُّشْدِ۔
Contemplation guides [one] to the right path.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الفِكْرُ يَهْدي إلَى الرُّشْدِ
which translates to
Contemplation guides [one] to the right path.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of deep thinking and reflection in guiding us towards the path of righteousness.
The word (al-fikr) "الفِكْرُ" in this Hadith refers to contemplation or deep thinking. It involves pondering over the meanings and implications of various aspects of life, seeking knowledge, and reflecting upon the signs of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the universe. This act of contemplation is a powerful tool that can lead us to the right path, enabling us to make informed decisions and choices in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
The concept of contemplation is beautifully emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to reflect upon His signs and the creation around them. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding
This verse highlights the importance of using our intellect and contemplating the wonders of the universe as a means to gain guidance and understanding.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190-191)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire'
This verse emphasizes the importance of contemplating the creation of Allah and recognizing the purpose behind it, which ultimately leads to seeking protection from the punishment of Hellfire.
Contemplation not only leads to a deeper understanding of the world around us, but it also helps us in making wise decisions and choices. By reflecting upon the consequences and implications of our actions, we can align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and make choices that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). For example, before engaging in any business transaction, a Muslim should contemplate the ethical implications and ensure that it is in line with the principles of justice and fairness prescribed by Islam.
Moreover, contemplation also plays a crucial role in self-reflection and self-improvement. By introspecting and analyzing our thoughts, actions, and intentions, we can identify our weaknesses and strive to rectify them. This process of self-reflection is essential for personal growth and spiritual development. It allows us to recognize our shortcomings, seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and make sincere efforts to improve ourselves.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of contemplation in guiding us towards the right path. By deeply thinking, reflecting, and pondering over the signs of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the universe, we can gain a deeper understanding of our purpose in life and make choices that align with the teachings of Islam. Contemplation also aids in self-reflection and self-improvement, enabling us to recognize our weaknesses and strive towards becoming better Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to contemplate and guide us to the path of righteousness.
