مُجالَسَةُ أبناءِ الدُّنيا مِنْساةٌ للإيمانِ قائدَةٌ إلى طاعةِ الشيطانِ۔
Sitting with worldly people causes one to forget his faith and drives [one] towards the obedience of Satan.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May the blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the negative consequences of associating and spending time with worldly people. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the detrimental effects of such companionship on one's faith.
The word (mujalasatu) "مُجالَسَةُ" refers to sitting or associating with someone. It implies spending time in the company of others, engaging in conversations, and sharing experiences. The word (abnaa' ad-dunya) "أبناءِ الدُّنيا" refers to worldly people or those who are engrossed in worldly affairs. These are individuals who prioritize materialistic pursuits and are distant from the remembrance of Allah and the teachings of Islam.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that sitting with such people has two negative consequences. Firstly, it causes one to forget his faith. This means that the influence of worldly individuals can lead a person to neglect their religious obligations, weaken their connection with Allah, and lose sight of the importance of their spiritual journey. Secondly, it drives one towards the obedience of Satan. This implies that associating with worldly people can lead to adopting their values, behaviors, and attitudes, which are often contrary to the teachings of Islam. It can push a person towards engaging in sinful acts and following the temptations of Satan.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly warns us about the negative influence of bad companionship and the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous individuals. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah says, (Quran 18:28)
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect
This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing our companions wisely. We should seek the company of those who remember Allah, strive for His pleasure, and prioritize their spiritual growth. Associating with such individuals helps to strengthen our faith, increase our knowledge, and keep us on the right path.
Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, where Allah says, (Quran 60:1)
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allah, your Lord
This verse highlights the importance of not befriending those who oppose the teachings of Islam and have enmity towards the believers. Associating with such individuals can lead to compromising our faith, adopting their beliefs, and deviating from the path of righteousness.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand the significance of choosing our companions wisely. Our company plays a crucial role in shaping our thoughts, actions, and ultimately, our faith. Associating with worldly people who are distant from the remembrance of Allah can have a detrimental effect on our spiritual well-being.
Therefore, as Muslims, it is essential for us to seek the company of those who are committed to their faith, who remind us of Allah, and who inspire us to strive for righteousness. By doing so, we can protect our faith, strengthen our connection with Allah, and ensure that our actions are aligned with the teachings of Islam. May Allah guide us in choosing righteous companions and protect us from the negative influences of the world.
