If I wished to inform every man from among you of where he has come from and where he is going to and about all his affairs, I would do so, but I fear that you will take me and abandon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. However, I will convey it to the selected ones who are safe from that [fear]. By the One who sent him with truth and chose him above the creation, I do not speak save the truth. He (the Prophet) has informed me about all this and about the destruction of those who are destroyed and the salvation of those who are saved (and the consequences of this matter [of the caliphate]). He left nothing that I would encounter except that he put it into my ear and informed me about it.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his deep knowledge and understanding of the affairs of every individual. He states that if he desired, he could inform each person about their origins, their destinations, and all their affairs. This statement highlights the immense knowledge and wisdom bestowed upon Imam Ali by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then explains his hesitation in sharing this knowledge with everyone. He fears that if he were to disclose such information, people might reject him and abandon the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (). This fear stems from his deep concern for the faith and unity of the Muslim Ummah.

The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) clarifies that he will only convey this knowledge to those who are trustworthy and have firm belief in him. This indicates the importance of faith and trustworthiness in receiving and understanding the deeper truths of Islam.

To understand the connotation of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am, verse 59:

And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.

This verse emphasizes that the knowledge of the unseen belongs solely to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). No one, except Allah, has complete knowledge of the origins, destinations, and affairs of every individual. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate of knowledge and wisdom, is granted a portion of this knowledge by Allah's permission.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am, verse 50, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

Say, 'I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.' Say, 'Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?'

This verse highlights the humility of the Prophet Muhammad () and his acknowledgement that he does not possess the knowledge of the unseen. Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) acknowledges that his knowledge is derived from the teachings and revelations of the Prophet (). He speaks only the truth, as he has been entrusted with this knowledge by the Prophet ().

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further affirms that the Prophet () has informed him about all matters, including the destruction of those who are destined to be destroyed and the salvation of those who are destined to be saved. This knowledge encompasses the consequences and outcomes of the caliphate and the affairs of the Muslim Ummah.

The deep understanding and knowledge possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a reflection of his close relationship with the Prophet Muhammad () and his unwavering commitment to the teachings of Islam. His role as the rightful successor of the Prophet () and the guardian of divine knowledge is evident in this hadith.

In conclusion, this hadith highlights the profound knowledge and wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) regarding the origins, destinations, and affairs of individuals. It emphasizes the importance of faith, trustworthiness, and the guidance of the Prophet () in understanding the deeper truths of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to comprehend and benefit from the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Ahl al-Bayt.
