(Ghurar al-Hikam: Usurped Rights)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

In amassing the usurped rights [of the people] there is cessation [and loss] of power.

This Hadith highlights the consequences of accumulating wealth or power through unjust means and usurping the rights of others.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ihtiqab) "احْتِقابِ" refers to the act of amassing or accumulating. It implies the gathering of wealth or power. The term (al-mazalim) "المَظالِمِ" signifies the injustices or usurped rights. These are the rights of individuals that have been wrongfully taken away from them.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that in the process of accumulating these usurped rights, there is a (zawal al-qudrah) "زَوالُ القُدْرَةِ", which means the cessation or loss of power. This loss of power can manifest in various ways. It could be a decline in one's influence, reputation, or even physical strength. This Hadith serves as a reminder that ill-gotten gains ultimately lead to a loss of power and authority.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 2:188)

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]

This verse emphasizes the prohibition of unjustly consuming the wealth of others and bribing the rulers to gain personal benefits. It highlights the importance of upholding justice and refraining from usurping the rights of others. The consequences of such actions are severe, as Allah warns that those who engage in such practices are consuming wealth in sin.

Another verse that sheds light on the concept of usurping rights is found in Surah Al-Isra, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:34)

And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned

This verse emphasizes the importance of protecting the rights of orphans and not encroaching upon their property. It serves as a reminder that usurping the rights of the vulnerable, such as orphans, is a grave injustice. By extension, this verse teaches us the importance of respecting the rights of all individuals and refraining from any form of oppression or exploitation.

Reflecting upon the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that accumulating wealth or power through unjust means is not only morally wrong but also leads to a loss of power and authority. When individuals amass wealth by usurping the rights of others, they are essentially building their empire on a foundation of injustice and oppression. Such actions are contrary to the principles of Islam, which emphasize justice, fairness, and the protection of individual rights.

Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder that true power lies in righteousness and the pursuit of justice. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, understood the consequences of unjust actions. He reminds us that true power is not derived from material possessions or authority gained through oppression, but rather from upholding justice and respecting the rights of others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against amassing wealth or power through unjust means and usurping the rights of others. It highlights the consequences of such actions, which ultimately lead to a loss of power and authority. By reflecting on the teachings of the Quran, we understand the importance of upholding justice, respecting the rights of others, and refraining from any form of oppression or exploitation. May we all strive to embody the principles of justice and righteousness in our lives, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the well-being of our fellow Muslims.
