(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of foresight, self-improvement, and taking proactive actions to prepare for the future. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound saying in light of the Quran.

The first important word in this Hadith is (intelligent person) "عاقل". An intelligent person is not merely someone with a high IQ, but rather someone who possesses wisdom, insight, and the ability to make sound judgments. In the context of this Hadith, an intelligent person is one who is aware of the consequences of their actions and plans for the future.

The second word is (looks) "نظر". This implies that an intelligent person does not live in the present moment alone, but rather contemplates and reflects upon the future. They consider the potential outcomes of their decisions and actions, ensuring that they align with their long-term goals and aspirations.

The third word is (strives) "سعى". This signifies the importance of taking active steps to unshackle one's soul. It refers to the constant effort to improve oneself, break free from negative habits and behaviors, and strive for personal growth and development. This includes both spiritual and worldly endeavors.

The fourth word is (works) "عمل". An intelligent person does not merely plan and contemplate, but also takes practical action to achieve their goals. They understand that success is not attained through wishful thinking alone, but through diligent effort and hard work.

The final phrase (which must come to pass and which cannot be escaped) "لامحيص له عنه" highlights the inevitability of certain events and circumstances in life. An intelligent person recognizes that there are certain obligations and responsibilities that cannot be avoided. They accept these realities and work towards fulfilling their duties, both towards themselves and others.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of foresight, self-improvement, and taking proactive actions to prepare for the future.

In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse urges believers to reflect upon their actions and consider the consequences they will face in the Hereafter. It encourages them to strive for righteousness and to be mindful of their deeds.

In Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah says,

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights the importance of taking proactive actions to attain success. It emphasizes the necessity of faith, good deeds, and mutual counsel in order to avoid loss in this world and the Hereafter.

From these verses, we can see that the Quran emphasizes the importance of foresight, self-improvement, and taking proactive actions to prepare for the future. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) echoes these teachings, urging Muslims to be intelligent individuals who plan and work diligently to achieve their goals.

By contemplating the future, striving for self-improvement, and taking practical actions, we can ensure that we are prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be proactive, responsible, and forward-thinking individuals who strive for success in both this world and the Hereafter.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and insight to be intelligent individuals who plan for the future, unshackle our souls, and work diligently towards our goals. May He bless us with success in this life and the Hereafter.
