اَللَّجاجُ يَنْبُو بِراكِبِهِ۔
Stubbornness causes its rider to fall off.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Stubbornness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اللَّجاجُ يَنْبُو بِراكِبِهِ۔" This Hadith can be translated into English as,
Stubbornness causes its rider to fall off.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word "اللَّجاجُ" refers to stubbornness or obstinacy. It signifies a refusal to yield or change one's position, even when faced with evidence or reason. The word "يَنْبُو" means to fall off or to be thrown off, indicating the consequence of stubbornness. Lastly, "راكِبِهِ" refers to the rider, symbolizing the person who possesses stubbornness.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:46)
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient
This verse highlights the importance of obedience and discourages engaging in disputes that lead to a loss of strength and courage.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 3:105)
And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And for them is a great punishment
This verse warns against division and disagreement among Muslims after receiving clear guidance, emphasizing the negative consequences that arise from such behavior.
Now, let us reflect on the exegesis of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, teaches us a valuable lesson about the dangers of stubbornness. Stubbornness is a trait that hinders growth, impedes understanding, and prevents unity among Muslims.
When a person clings to their own opinions and refuses to consider alternative viewpoints, they become like a rider on a stubborn horse. Just as a stubborn horse throws off its rider, stubbornness causes individuals to fall off the path of righteousness and lose their way. It leads to division, disputes, and the weakening of the Muslim community.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us to be open-minded, humble, and willing to listen to others. Islam encourages us to seek knowledge, engage in dialogue, and strive for unity. By embracing these principles, we can avoid the pitfalls of stubbornness and work towards a harmonious and prosperous Muslim ummah.
Let us reflect upon our own actions and attitudes. Are we willing to let go of our stubbornness and embrace the wisdom of others? Are we open to constructive criticism and willing to change our perspectives when presented with evidence? By doing so, we can strengthen our faith, foster unity, and contribute to the betterment of the Muslim community.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the path of righteousness and grant us the wisdom to overcome our stubbornness. May we strive to be humble and open-minded, seeking knowledge and fostering unity among Muslims. Ameen.
