[In the Hereafter] the souls are held at ransom by the weight of their sins and have become certain of their unseen fates. Neither can good acts be added [to their record] nor are they given warning about their evil deeds [rather, the harsh punishment of hell awaits them].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Souls)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the state of souls in the Hereafter. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The souls are held at ransom by the weight of their sins and have become certain of their unseen fates. Neither can good acts be added [to their record] nor are they given warning about their evil deeds [rather, the harsh punishment of hell awaits them].

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word (ruh) "روح" refers to the soul, the essence of a person that continues to exist after death. It is the spiritual entity that is accountable for one's actions in this world and the Hereafter. The term (murtahinah) "مرتهنة" means being held at ransom or hostage, indicating that the souls are bound by the consequences of their own actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes that the souls have become (muqinah) "موقنة", certain or convinced, about their unseen fates. This certainty arises from the realization of the weight of their sins and the knowledge of the impending punishment or reward awaiting them in the Hereafter. It is a state of complete awareness and acknowledgement of the consequences of one's actions.

The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then states that in this state, the souls cannot benefit from any additional good deeds, as their fate has already been sealed. Similarly, they are not given any warning or reminder about their evil deeds, as they are already aware of the consequences. This highlights the finality and irrevocability of the judgment in the Hereafter.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:164),

And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

This verse emphasizes the individual responsibility of each soul for its own actions. No soul can bear the burden of another, and each will be held accountable for their own deeds. The weight of sins mentioned in the Hadith reflects this concept, as the souls are held hostage by the consequences of their own actions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And We have fastened every man's deeds to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring out for him a book which he will find wide open.

This verse highlights the concept of deeds being attached to the neck of each individual. It symbolizes the inescapable connection between one's actions and their consequences. The souls mentioned in the Hadith are held captive by the weight of their sins, unable to free themselves from the burden they have accumulated.

The consequences of this state of the souls are severe, as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) alludes to. The souls are certain of their unseen fates, indicating that they have realized the gravity of their actions and the punishment that awaits them. This serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to be mindful of our deeds and strive for righteousness in order to avoid such a fate.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides a profound insight into the state of souls in the Hereafter. It emphasizes the weight of sins that holds the souls hostage, their certainty about their unseen fates, and the inability to change their record of deeds. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be conscious of their actions and strive for righteousness in order to avoid the harsh punishment of hell. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the right path and grant us success in the Hereafter.
