كَمْ مِنْ لَذَّة دَنِيَّة مَنَعَتْ سَنِيَّ دَرَجات۔
How many a vile pleasure has prevented one from [attaining] lofty stations.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Pleasure And Delight)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كَمْ مِنْ لَذَّة دَنِيَّة مَنَعَتْ سَنِيَّ دَرَجات۔
This Hadith highlights the detrimental effect of worldly pleasures on one's spiritual progress and the attainment of higher ranks in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith to gain a comprehensive understanding. The word (lazza) "لَذَّة" refers to the temporary and fleeting pleasures of this worldly life. These pleasures often captivate and distract individuals, leading them away from the path of righteousness. The word (dunyā) "دَنِيَّة" signifies the material and transient nature of this world, emphasizing its temporary and insignificant nature in comparison to the eternal life hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the fact that these worldly pleasures have the potential to hinder our spiritual progress and prevent us from attaining lofty ranks in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and not be swayed by the allure of worldly desires.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and emphasizes the everlasting nature of the Hereafter. It serves as a reminder that our focus should be on the eternal life to come, rather than being consumed by the temporary pleasures of this world.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Imran (3:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.
This verse highlights the allure of worldly possessions and desires, but reminds us that the true reward lies with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their priorities and the potential consequences of indulging in worldly pleasures. It urges us to be mindful of the distractions and temptations that can hinder our spiritual progress and prevent us from attaining higher ranks in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By prioritizing our spiritual growth and focusing on the eternal life to come, we can overcome the allure of worldly desires and strive for the lofty stations promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to resist the temptations of this world and prioritize our spiritual growth. May we strive to attain the lofty stations in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and be among those who are successful in the Hereafter. And may the blessings and peace of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
