(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The tongues reveal that which is concealed by the inner consciences.

This enlightening saying highlights the power and significance of speech and language in conveying the thoughts and intentions that lie hidden within the depths of our hearts.

Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word "sunn" refers to the tongues, which are the instruments through which we communicate and express ourselves. The word "tutrimum" means to translate or reveal, while "tajunnuhu" refers to that which is concealed or hidden. Lastly, the word "dama'ir" signifies the inner consciences or the innermost thoughts and intentions of individuals.

This Hadith emphasizes that our tongues have the ability to disclose what is concealed within our hearts. It serves as a reminder that our words hold great power and can either reflect the purity and righteousness of our inner selves or expose the darkness and impurity within.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Qiyamah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 75:9)

On the Day when secrets will be disclosed

This verse highlights the Day of Judgment when all that was hidden will be made apparent. Similarly, our words have the potential to reveal our true selves, whether in this world or in the Hereafter.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us, (Quran 49:12)

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful

This verse highlights the importance of guarding our tongues and refraining from spreading rumors, backbiting, and making negative assumptions about others. Our words have the potential to harm and destroy relationships, and they can also expose the darkness within our own hearts.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be mindful of our speech and to use our tongues in a responsible and righteous manner. It urges us to reflect upon the consequences of our words and the impact they can have on ourselves and others. Our words should be a reflection of the goodness and purity that resides within us.

Furthermore, this Hadith encourages us to strive for self-awareness and introspection. By being conscious of our inner thoughts and intentions, we can ensure that our words align with our true beliefs and values. It reminds us that our tongues have the power to either elevate us or lead us astray, depending on how we choose to use them.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of guarding our tongues and being mindful of our speech. It reminds us that our words have the ability to reveal the true nature of our hearts and that we should strive to use our tongues in a manner that reflects righteousness and sincerity. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to speak with wisdom and kindness, and may He purify our hearts and tongues from all forms of negativity and harm.
