(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Lawful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes three important aspects of a Muslim's life: clinging to the lawful, treating one's family with kindness, and remembering Allah in all circumstances. Let us delve deeper into the meanings and implications of these words in light of the Quran.

Firstly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to

cling to the lawful.

This means that we should adhere to what is permissible according to the teachings of Islam and avoid what is forbidden. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:1)

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts

This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling our obligations and contracts, which is a part of clinging to the lawful.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:188)

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]

This verse emphasizes the prohibition of consuming others' wealth unjustly, which is another aspect of clinging to the lawful.

Secondly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to

treat our family with kindness.

This encompasses showing love, respect, and compassion towards our family members. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Surah Al-Isra, 17:26)

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully

This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling the rights of our relatives, which includes treating them with kindness and generosity.

Additionally, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24)

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small'

This verse emphasizes the importance of being humble and merciful towards our parents, who are an integral part of our family. Treating our family with kindness not only strengthens our relationships but also brings about harmony and blessings in our lives.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to

remember Allah in all circumstances.

This means that we should maintain a constant awareness of Allah's presence and seek His guidance and support in every aspect of our lives. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Surah Al-Imran, 3:159)

And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]

This verse encourages us to remember Allah and rely on Him in making decisions and facing challenges.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:205)

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless

This verse emphasizes the importance of remembering Allah in our hearts, especially during the morning and evening, as a means of seeking His guidance and protection.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a comprehensive guide for Muslims. It reminds us to adhere to the lawful, treat our family with kindness, and remember Allah in all circumstances. By following these teachings, we can cultivate a righteous and harmonious life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial for ourselves and our families. May Allah grant us the ability to implement these teachings in our lives and attain His pleasure.
