(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ذَكَرَ اللّهَ ذَكَرَهُ۔

This can be translated as,

Whoever remembers Allah, He remembers him.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (dhakara) "ذَكَرَ" in Arabic means to remember, mention, or invoke. It encompasses both the physical act of remembering and the spiritual act of invoking Allah's name with sincerity and devotion. When a person remembers Allah, it is an expression of their faith, humility, and gratitude towards their Creator.

Allah, in His infinite mercy, promises that when we remember Him, He too remembers us. This divine remembrance is not limited to mere acknowledgment, but it encompasses Allah's attention, care, and blessings upon the one who remembers Him. It is a reciprocal relationship between the servant and the Lord, where the servant's remembrance is met with Allah's remembrance.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of remembering Allah and the blessings that come with it. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:152)

Remember Me, and I will remember you

This verse beautifully echoes the essence of the Hadith, highlighting the reciprocal nature of remembrance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, Allah states, (7:152)

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me

This verse not only emphasizes the importance of remembrance but also highlights the connection between remembrance and gratitude. When we remember Allah, we are reminded of His countless blessings upon us, and this leads to a deeper sense of gratitude.

The act of remembering Allah has profound consequences in a Muslim's life. It serves as a means of purification, guidance, and protection from evil. When we remember Allah, our hearts are filled with His remembrance, and this remembrance acts as a shield against temptations and distractions. It strengthens our connection with Allah and helps us navigate through the challenges of life with faith and resilience.

Moreover, the remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and peace to our hearts. In Surah Ar-Ra'd, Allah says, (13:28)

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured

This verse highlights the transformative power of remembrance, as it brings solace and contentment to the believers.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and understanding of Islam, reminds us of the significance of remembering Allah. By uttering this concise yet beautiful saying, he emphasizes the importance of constantly remembering Allah in our daily lives. Whether through reciting His names, engaging in supplications, or reflecting upon His attributes, the remembrance of Allah should be an integral part of our spiritual journey.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we remember Allah, He reciprocates by remembering us. This act of remembrance is not merely a ritualistic practice but a means of establishing a profound connection with our Creator. It brings blessings, guidance, and tranquility to our lives. May we strive to remember Allah in all aspects of our lives and experience the profound impact of His remembrance.
