(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Equitable)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

المُنْصِفُ كَثِيرُ الأوْلِياءِ والأوِدّاءِ

which translates to

The equitable person has many friends and intimates.

In this Hadith, the word "المُنْصِفُ" refers to a person who is just, fair, and impartial in their dealings with others. This person possesses qualities of justice, equity, and balance in their actions and decisions.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of justice in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the significance of justice in resolving conflicts and maintaining harmony within the Muslim community. It emphasizes the need for impartiality and fairness in settling disputes. The equitable person, as mentioned in the Hadith, is one who upholds justice and acts as a mediator in resolving conflicts.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being just even in the face of animosity or personal biases. The equitable person, as described in the Hadith, does not allow personal feelings or prejudices to cloud their judgment but remains steadfast in their pursuit of justice.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the positive consequences of being an equitable person. Such an individual will have many friends and intimates. This is because justice and fairness are qualities that attract people towards an individual. When people see someone who is just and fair in their dealings, they are naturally drawn to them and seek their companionship.

An equitable person is someone who is trusted and respected by others. They are seen as reliable and dependable individuals who can be relied upon to make fair decisions. Consequently, they are surrounded by a network of friends and intimates who value their qualities of justice and fairness.

Moreover, the equitable person also has the ability to resolve conflicts and bring people together. Their impartiality and fairness make them effective mediators in resolving disputes. By acting as a bridge between conflicting parties, they are able to foster reconciliation and harmony within their community.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for justice and fairness in their interactions with others. It encourages us to be equitable individuals who are guided by the principles of justice and impartiality. By embodying these qualities, we can not only attract friends and intimates but also contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of being an equitable person. It emphasizes the significance of justice and fairness in our dealings with others. By upholding these qualities, we can attract friends and intimates, resolve conflicts, and contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be equitable individuals and may He guide us to follow the path of justice and fairness.
