The ugliness of dyslogia is better than the harm of talking nonsense.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Dyslogia (The Inability To Express Oneself Effectively))

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The ugliness of dyslogia is better than the harm of talking nonsense.

Dyslogia refers to the act of speaking in a harsh or offensive manner, while talking nonsense refers to speaking without any purpose or benefit. This Hadith emphasizes the importance of choosing our words carefully and avoiding harmful speech.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of good speech and warns against the consequences of harmful speech. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of respecting and refraining from ridiculing others. It reminds us that we should not insult or use offensive language towards one another, as it goes against the principles of faith. Such behavior is considered disobedience and is condemned by Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah says,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages us to speak in the best possible manner, promoting harmony and unity among believers. It reminds us that Satan seeks to create division and discord through our speech, and we must strive to counteract his influence by choosing our words wisely.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith further emphasizes the importance of avoiding harmful speech. Dyslogia, or speaking in a harsh and offensive manner, not only damages relationships but also tarnishes one's own character. It creates a negative environment and leads to animosity and resentment among people. On the other hand, talking nonsense, speaking without purpose or benefit, wastes time and energy that could be better utilized for productive endeavors.

By highlighting the ugliness of dyslogia and the harm of talking nonsense, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the consequences of our words. Our speech has the power to either build bridges or create barriers, to bring people together or drive them apart. It is a reflection of our character and a means of expressing our thoughts and emotions. Therefore, it is essential to exercise caution and mindfulness in our speech.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims should strive to emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), particularly his profound knowledge and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his eloquence and ability to convey deep meanings in concise and impactful words. His teachings and guidance serve as a source of inspiration for Muslims to improve their communication skills and promote positive interactions within their communities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of choosing our words wisely and avoiding harmful speech. It encourages us to speak in a manner that is respectful, beneficial, and purposeful. By doing so, we can foster unity, build strong relationships, and contribute to a positive and harmonious society. May Allah guide us in our speech and grant us the wisdom to use our words for the betterment of ourselves and others.
