Hadith #3502

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Lafiqha liman la yudimu al-dars.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of continuous study and learning in order to acquire deep understanding. Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "lafiqha" in the Hadith refers to deep understanding or profound knowledge. It signifies a level of comprehension that goes beyond surface-level understanding. This understanding is acquired through continuous study and learning. The word "liman" means

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that true understanding and remembrance are only granted to those who seek knowledge.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse indicates that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It emphasizes the importance of continuously seeking knowledge in order to be raised in ranks.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that deep understanding and profound knowledge are not achieved through sporadic or intermittent efforts. Rather, they require consistent and continuous study. Just as a tree needs water and sunlight to grow, our minds need constant nourishment through the pursuit of knowledge.

When we neglect to continue our study, we limit our potential for growth and understanding. We may acquire some knowledge, but it will remain superficial and lacking in depth. On the other hand, those who dedicate themselves to continuous learning are able to delve deeper into their subjects, uncovering new insights and expanding their understanding.

The consequences of not continuing our study are manifold. We may find ourselves stagnant, unable to progress or contribute meaningfully to our fields of interest. Our understanding may become outdated or incomplete, hindering our ability to navigate complex issues and make informed decisions. Moreover, neglecting to continue our study can lead to a decline in our intellectual and spiritual growth.

In contrast, those who prioritize continuous study and learning are able to adapt to new challenges and developments. They are equipped with the tools to critically analyze information, discern truth from falsehood, and contribute positively to society. Their deep understanding enables them to make informed choices and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering personal and collective growth.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to seek knowledge throughout our lives. The pursuit of knowledge is not limited to a particular age or stage in life; rather, it is a lifelong journey. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,

Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and highlights its obligatory nature.
