Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

From the best noble deeds is bearing the liabilities [and debts of others] and being hospitable to one’s guests.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of two virtuous actions: bearing the burdens of others and showing hospitality to guests.

Let us examine the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (makarim) "مَكَارِمِ" refers to noble deeds or virtuous actions. It encompasses acts that are praiseworthy and elevate the status of a person in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (tahammul) "تَحَمُّلُ" means to bear or carry the burdens or liabilities of others. It implies taking on the responsibilities and debts of others, both financial and non-financial. The word (magarim) "مَغَارِمِ" refers to the liabilities or debts of others. It includes any obligations or burdens that individuals may have, whether they are financial or non-financial in nature. Lastly, the word (iqra') "إِقْرَاءُ" means to be hospitable or generous towards one's guests. It signifies showing kindness, generosity, and warmth towards those who visit us.

To understand the significance of these noble deeds, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of being steadfast and firm in our actions. By bearing the burdens of others, we demonstrate our commitment to helping and supporting those in need. This act of selflessness is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthens our connection with Him.

Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the significance of hospitality towards guests. In Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51:24-25), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And in their wealth is a recognized right for the needy and the destitute. And those who believe in the Day of Recompense.

This verse highlights the duty of Muslims to provide for the needs of the less fortunate. By being hospitable to our guests, we fulfill this obligation and demonstrate our belief in the Day of Recompense, where our actions will be accounted for.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes these noble deeds because they have profound consequences in our lives. When we bear the liabilities of others, we alleviate their burdens and provide them with relief. This act of kindness not only benefits them but also purifies our souls and strengthens our character. It teaches us empathy, compassion, and selflessness. Similarly, when we show hospitality to our guests, we create an atmosphere of love, warmth, and generosity. We make them feel welcomed and valued, fostering a sense of unity and harmony within our communities.

Moreover, these noble deeds reflect the qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified these virtues in his own life. He bore the burdens of the community, both financially and emotionally, and was known for his generosity and hospitality towards others. His actions serve as a shining example for Muslims to follow.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of bearing the liabilities of others and being hospitable to guests as noble deeds. These actions are rooted in the teachings of the Quran and have profound consequences in our lives. By practicing these virtues, we not only fulfill our obligations towards others but also purify our souls and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these virtues and follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
