إنَّ ذِكْرَ الغيبَةِ شَرُّ الإفْكِ۔
Verily the mentioning of slander is the worst falsehood.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Backbiting)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily the mentioning of slander is the worst falsehood.
Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (dhikr) "ذِكْرَ" in Arabic refers to the act of mentioning or remembering something. In this context, it signifies the act of spreading slander or false accusations against others. The term (al-ghībah) "الغيبَةِ" refers to backbiting or speaking ill of someone in their absence. It is an act that tarnishes the reputation of others and spreads false information about them.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against the sin of backbiting in the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (49:12)
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This ayah emphasizes the gravity of backbiting and compares it to the repulsive act of consuming the flesh of a deceased person. Just as we would find such an act abhorrent, we should also detest the act of backbiting. It is a sin that not only harms the one being slandered but also tarnishes the character of the one engaging in it.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further highlights the severity of slander by describing it as "the worst falsehood." This means that spreading false accusations and engaging in backbiting is not only a sin but also a form of falsehood that is particularly heinous in the sight of Allah.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us to speak the truth and avoid falsehood in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:42)
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
This ayah reminds us of the importance of upholding the truth and refraining from spreading falsehood, including through slander and backbiting.
The consequences of engaging in slander are severe. It not only damages the reputation and honor of the person being slandered but also creates divisions and conflicts within the Muslim community. It erodes trust and unity, leading to a breakdown in relationships and the spread of animosity among Muslims.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, warns us against the evil of slander. His words serve as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their speech and to refrain from engaging in backbiting or spreading false accusations. Instead, we should strive to promote unity, harmony, and justice within our communities.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should ask ourselves: Are we mindful of our words? Do we engage in gossip or backbiting? Are we quick to believe and spread rumors without verifying their authenticity? It is essential for us to be conscious of the power of our words and to use them in a manner that brings about goodness and righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to abstain from slander and backbiting. It highlights the gravity of spreading false accusations and emphasizes the importance of upholding the truth. By adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, we can strive to create a society based on justice, unity, and compassion. May Allah protect us from the sin of slander and grant us the ability to speak the truth and promote goodness in all aspects of our lives.
