Hadith #4516

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

مَنْ تَرَفَّقَ فِي الأُمورِ، أدْرَكَ أَرَبَهُ مِنْها۔

This Hadith can be translated as:

One who proceeds with leniency in his matters, acquires his objectives from them.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (taraffaqa) "تَرَفَّقَ" is derived from the root word (rafaqa) "رَفَقَ", which means to be gentle, kind, and lenient. It implies approaching matters with a soft and compassionate attitude, rather than being harsh or rigid. The word (umoor) "أُمورِ" refers to matters, affairs, or issues that one encounters in life. And the word (arabahu) "أَرَبَهُ" means to achieve or attain one's objectives or goals.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of leniency and gentleness in various verses. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:159)

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you

This verse highlights the significance of leniency in dealing with others, as it fosters unity and strengthens relationships.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hijr, Allah praises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying, (Quran 21:107)

And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds

The exegesis of this Hadith teaches us that approaching matters with leniency and gentleness leads to favorable outcomes.
