(Ghurar al-Hikam: Self-Scrutiny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رَحِمَ اللّهُ عَبْداً راقَبَ ذَنْبَهُ، وخافَ رَبَّهُ۔

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and God-consciousness. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (raqaba) "راقَبَ" in this Hadith means to scrutinize or closely monitor. It refers to the act of being vigilant and watchful over one's own actions, particularly in relation to sins and transgressions. This vigilance is a sign of a sincere and conscientious servant of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It demonstrates a deep sense of self-awareness and a desire for self-improvement.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to engage in self-reflection and self-accountability in numerous verses of the Quran. For example, in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse emphasizes the importance of individuals examining their own deeds and actions, taking responsibility for them, and being mindful of the consequences.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Taghabun (64:16), Allah states,

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse highlights the significance of being conscious of Allah's commands and being mindful of one's own shortcomings and weaknesses.

The second part of the Hadith states, (wakhaafa rabbahu) "وخافَ رَبَّهُ", which means to fear one's Lord. This fear is not a fear of punishment, but rather a fear of displeasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and falling short in fulfilling His commands. It is a fear rooted in love and reverence for the Creator. This fear motivates a person to strive for righteousness and to avoid anything that may displease Allah.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of fearing Allah. In Surah Al-Imran (3:102), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

This verse reminds us that true fear of Allah entails recognizing His greatness, submitting to His will, and living a life of obedience to Him.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah states,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that true nobility and superiority lie in righteousness, which can only be achieved through a sincere fear of Allah and a conscious effort to follow His guidance.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to engage in self-reflection, to scrutinize their own sins, and to fear their Lord. By constantly monitoring our actions and being aware of our shortcomings, we can strive for self-improvement and seek forgiveness from Allah. This self-accountability leads to a heightened sense of God-consciousness and a deeper connection with our Creator.

When we scrutinize our sins and fear Allah, it motivates us to rectify our behavior, seek forgiveness, and strive for righteousness. It helps us avoid falling into the traps of temptation and sin. This self-awareness and fear of displeasing Allah ultimately leads to a life of piety, humility, and submission to His will.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to engage in self-reflection, to scrutinize their own sins, and to fear their Lord. By doing so, we can strive for self-improvement, seek forgiveness, and ultimately attain a higher level of God-consciousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to constantly monitor our actions, fear Him, and seek His forgiveness.
