مَنْ خالفَ رُشْدَهُ تَبِعَ هَواهُ۔
One who opposes his reason follows his desires.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rectitude And Right Guidance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man khalaafa rushdahu tabi'a hawahu,
which translates to
One who opposes his reason follows his desires.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. "Khalaafa" means to oppose or contradict, "rushdahu" refers to one's reason or guidance, and "tabi'a" signifies following or pursuing. It is important to note that "rushd" here refers to the guidance and intellect that Allah has bestowed upon us as human beings.
Allah, in the Quran, emphasizes the importance of using our reason and intellect to discern right from wrong. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah says,
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse highlights the significance of utilizing our intellect and reason to make informed decisions and avoid following our base desires blindly.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), Allah warns against following one's desires without guidance, saying,
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of following reason and intellect over base desires. When we oppose our reason and allow our desires to dictate our actions, we deviate from the right path and become susceptible to making wrong choices.
Let us reflect on the consequences of following our desires without guidance. When we prioritize our desires over reason, we may engage in actions that are harmful to ourselves and others. For example, if a person is driven by the desire for material wealth, they may resort to unethical means such as fraud or exploitation. Similarly, if a person is driven by the desire for power, they may oppress and harm others in their pursuit.
On the other hand, when we align our actions with reason and guidance, we make choices that are in line with the teachings of Islam and beneficial for our spiritual growth. Allah, in the Quran, repeatedly encourages us to use our intellect and reason to understand His signs and follow the right path. For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:164), Allah says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to constantly evaluate our actions and ensure that they are guided by reason and intellect. By doing so, we can avoid falling into the trap of following our base desires blindly, which can lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of using our reason and intellect to make informed decisions. When we oppose our reason and follow our desires without guidance, we risk deviating from the right path and engaging in actions that are detrimental to ourselves and others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to always prioritize reason over desires and guide us on the straight path.
