مَنْ كَلِفَ بِالْعِلْمِ فَقَدْ أحْسَنَ إلى نَفْسِهِ۔
One who is fond of knowledge has [actually] done good to his soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man kalifa bil-'ilm faqad ahsana ila nafsih.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance and virtue of seeking knowledge. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "kalifa" in this Hadith refers to the one who takes upon themselves the responsibility of seeking knowledge. It implies a voluntary commitment to acquire knowledge and understanding. The word "ilm" refers to knowledge, encompassing both religious and worldly knowledge. It is a broad term that includes knowledge of the Quran, Hadith, jurisprudence, sciences, and all forms of beneficial knowledge.
The Hadith states that one who takes upon themselves the responsibility of seeking knowledge has actually done good to their soul. This means that seeking knowledge is not only a virtuous act but also has profound benefits for the individual. It is a means of self-improvement, personal growth, and spiritual development.
The Quran beautifully emphasizes the significance of knowledge in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes the superiority of knowledge and the importance of seeking it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse indicates that those who possess knowledge will be elevated and honored by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It highlights the value and reward of seeking knowledge in the sight of Allah.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to actively engage in the pursuit of knowledge. It reminds us that seeking knowledge is not only a noble act but also a means of self-improvement and personal growth. By seeking knowledge, we enhance our understanding of the world, develop critical thinking skills, and deepen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Moreover, seeking knowledge enables us to fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. It equips us with the necessary tools to practice our religion correctly, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society. It empowers us to become better individuals, leaders, and role models for others.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge are also evident. Ignorance can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and misguided actions. It can result in the spread of false beliefs, division among Muslims, and the perpetuation of harmful practices. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to seek knowledge from authentic sources, study the Quran and Hadith, and consult knowledgeable scholars.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance and virtue of seeking knowledge. It encourages Muslims to actively engage in the pursuit of knowledge, as it is a means of self-improvement and personal growth. The Quranic verses further reinforce the significance of knowledge and its rewards in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to be among those who seek knowledge, for in doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of our community and society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability and motivation to seek knowledge and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
