(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصديق أفضل الذخرين" which translates to

A friend is the better of the two resources.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of having a true and sincere friend in one's life.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a comprehensive understanding of its meaning. The word (as-sadiq) "الصديق" refers to a friend who is trustworthy, loyal, and sincere. This friend is not merely an acquaintance, but someone who stands by your side through thick and thin, offering support, guidance, and companionship. The word (afdal) "أفضل" denotes superiority, excellence, and preference. It signifies that a true friend surpasses all other resources and blessings in one's life.

To further elucidate the significance of having a sincere friend, we turn to the Quran, which provides numerous verses emphasizing the importance of companionship and friendship. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Kahf (18:28),

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.

This verse highlights the virtue of surrounding oneself with righteous companions who engage in the remembrance of Allah and seek His pleasure. Such companionship not only strengthens one's faith but also serves as a source of support and encouragement on the path of righteousness.

In another verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and solidarity among believers, as disputes and divisions weaken the community and diminish its strength. A true friend, as described by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is someone who stands by your side, fostering unity and providing strength in times of difficulty.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening Hadith holds immense wisdom and practical implications. A sincere friend is not only a source of emotional support but also plays a crucial role in shaping one's character and guiding them towards righteousness. A true friend is someone who advises and reminds you of your duties towards Allah and helps you navigate the challenges of life. They serve as a mirror, reflecting your strengths and weaknesses, and encouraging personal growth and self-improvement.

Moreover, a sincere friend is instrumental in fostering a positive and healthy environment. They inspire you to strive for excellence, motivate you to overcome obstacles, and celebrate your successes. Conversely, a toxic or insincere friend can lead one astray, influencing them towards negative behaviors and compromising their values. Therefore, it is essential to choose friends wisely, seeking those who share your values, support your aspirations, and encourage your spiritual growth.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of having a sincere friend in one's life. A true friend surpasses all other resources and blessings, providing support, guidance, and companionship. The Quranic verses further emphasize the importance of righteous companionship and unity among believers. A sincere friend is not only a source of emotional support but also plays a pivotal role in shaping one's character and guiding them towards righteousness. Therefore, it is crucial to choose friends wisely, seeking those who inspire and encourage us on the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with sincere and righteous friends who bring us closer to Him and help us attain success in this life and the hereafter.
