(Ghurar al-Hikam: Equity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالنَّصَفَةِ تَدُومُ الْوُصْلَةُ۔" This can be translated as

Through fairness relationships last.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (nasafah) "نَّصَفَةِ" in this Hadith refers to fairness, equity, and justice. It signifies the act of treating others with equality and impartiality. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that maintaining fairness is crucial for the longevity and strength of relationships. By treating others justly, we foster a sense of trust, respect, and harmony, which in turn strengthens the bonds between individuals, communities, and societies.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of fairness and justice in various contexts. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the significance of resolving conflicts and disputes with justice and fairness. It teaches us that true reconciliation can only be achieved through equitable treatment and impartial judgment. By upholding justice, we not only maintain the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims but also earn the love and pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even when it may be against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that justice should not be compromised due to personal biases or attachments. By being fair and just, we fulfill our duty as witnesses for Allah and contribute to the establishment of a just society.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that fairness is not only essential for maintaining relationships but also for the overall well-being of society. When individuals and communities are treated justly, they feel valued, respected, and included. This fosters a sense of unity, cooperation, and social cohesion, leading to a harmonious and prosperous society.

Conversely, when fairness is neglected, relationships become strained, trust is eroded, and conflicts arise. Injustice breeds resentment, division, and animosity, which can have far-reaching consequences. Therefore, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize fairness and justice in all aspects of their lives, be it in personal relationships, business dealings, or societal interactions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Through fairness relationships last

highlights the importance of treating others with equity and justice. By upholding fairness, we strengthen our relationships and contribute to the establishment of a just society. Let us strive to embody the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) by being fair and just in all our dealings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of justice and bless us with lasting and meaningful relationships.
