تَلْويحُ زَلَّةِ العاقِلِ لَهُ مِنْ أمَضِّ عِتابِهِ (أمَضَّ مِنْ عِتابهِ)۔
Hinting at [and making indirect references to] the error of the intelligent person is one of the most agonizing punishments for him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
تَلْويحُ زَلَّةِ العاقِلِ لَهُ مِنْ أمَضِّ عِتابِهِ
This can be translated as:
Hinting at [and making indirect references to] the error of the intelligent person is one of the most agonizing punishments for him.
In this beautiful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the emotional and psychological impact of hinting at the mistakes or errors of an intelligent individual. The word "تَلْويحُ" refers to hinting or making indirect references, while "زَلَّةِ" means error or mistake. "العاقِلِ" refers to the intelligent person, and "أمَضِّ" means one of the most agonizing or severe.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining the dignity and honor of others, even when they make mistakes. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.
This verse teaches us to refrain from mocking or belittling others, as they may possess qualities or virtues that we are unaware of.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12) to avoid suspicion and negative assumptions about others:
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.
This verse encourages us to give others the benefit of the doubt and not to jump to conclusions about their intentions or actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement aligns perfectly with these Quranic teachings. He highlights the emotional impact of hinting at the mistakes of an intelligent person, emphasizing that it can be one of the most agonizing punishments for them. This is because intelligent individuals are often acutely aware of their own errors and shortcomings. They may already be self-critical and striving for self-improvement. By hinting at their mistakes, we add to their burden and inflict unnecessary emotional pain upon them.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of compassion, empathy, and understanding. Instead of pointing out the errors of others, we should strive to support and uplift them. We should offer guidance and advice in a respectful and constructive manner, focusing on their strengths and potential for growth. This approach aligns with the Quranic teachings of maintaining the dignity and honor of others, as well as avoiding negative assumptions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the emotional impact of hinting at the mistakes of an intelligent person. It urges us to adopt a compassionate and empathetic approach, focusing on supporting and uplifting others rather than inflicting unnecessary pain. By aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran, we can foster a culture of respect, understanding, and growth within the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in embodying these virtues and grant us the wisdom to treat others with kindness and compassion.
