اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ أماتَ شَهْوَتَهُ۔
The intelligent person is one who annihilates his lust.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العاقلُ من أماتَ شَهْوَتَهُ
which translates to
The intelligent person is one who annihilates his lust.
This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-control and the suppression of one's desires for the sake of attaining true wisdom and intelligence.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (intelligent) "عاقل" refers to a person who possesses wisdom, understanding, and the ability to make sound judgments. It is derived from the root word "عقل" which means intellect or reason. The word (annihilates) "أمات" signifies the complete eradication or suppression of something. And finally, (lust) "شَهْوَة" refers to strong desires or passions that can lead a person astray if not controlled.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-restraint and the control of one's desires. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77),
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
Here, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us to seek the rewards of the Hereafter while not neglecting our responsibilities in this world. He warns against desiring corruption or indulging in unlawful pleasures, as it goes against the principles of intelligence and wisdom.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the importance of controlling one's thoughts and assumptions, as well as refraining from backbiting and spying on others. It teaches us to suppress our base desires to engage in gossip or harm others, as it goes against the principles of intelligence and righteousness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to reflect upon our desires and urges, and to exercise self-control. It reminds us that true intelligence lies in recognizing the transient nature of worldly pleasures and prioritizing the pursuit of higher goals, such as spiritual growth and the attainment of eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
By suppressing our lusts and desires, we gain mastery over our own selves and become capable of making rational decisions based on wisdom and righteousness. This self-control allows us to resist temptations and avoid engaging in actions that may lead to harm or sin.
For example, a person who is driven by their lustful desires may engage in illicit relationships or indulge in excessive materialism, both of which can lead to negative consequences such as broken families, moral corruption, and spiritual emptiness. On the other hand, an intelligent person who exercises self-control will prioritize their responsibilities, maintain healthy relationships, and strive for spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize self-control and the suppression of their lusts and desires. By doing so, we can attain true intelligence and wisdom, and live a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our base desires and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives.
