مَنِ اسْتَقْبَلَ الأُمُورَ أبْصَرَ۔
One who faces [and anticipates] issues [with thought and reflection], perceives.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Facing Issues)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنِ اسْتَقْبَلَ الأُمُورَ أبْصَرَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who faces [and anticipates] issues [with thought and reflection], perceives.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (istiqbal) "استقبل" in the Hadith means to face or confront. It signifies the act of actively engaging with the challenges and issues that come our way. It implies a proactive approach rather than a passive one. By facing the issues, we are acknowledging their existence and taking responsibility for finding solutions.
The word (al-umur) "الأُمُورَ" refers to matters or affairs. It encompasses all aspects of life, including personal, social, and spiritual matters. It highlights the importance of being aware and prepared for the various challenges that may arise in different spheres of our lives.
The word (absara) "أبصر" means to perceive or understand. It signifies the ability to gain insight and wisdom from the issues we face. It emphasizes the importance of reflection, contemplation, and deep thinking in order to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to be people of reflection and understanding. In Surah Al-Imran (3:190), Allah says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse reminds us to ponder upon the signs of Allah's creation and seek knowledge and wisdom from them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46), Allah says,
Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.
This verse emphasizes the importance of using our faculties of perception and understanding to gain insight and guidance from the world around us.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that by actively facing and engaging with the issues that come our way, we can gain a deeper understanding and perception of the world. It encourages us to be proactive in seeking knowledge, reflecting on our experiences, and contemplating the lessons that can be learned from them.
When we face challenges head-on, we are more likely to find solutions and grow as individuals. By perceiving and understanding the issues, we can make better decisions, avoid pitfalls, and navigate through the complexities of life with wisdom and insight.
For example, if we face a personal conflict, by actively engaging with the issue and seeking to understand the perspectives of all parties involved, we can find a resolution that is fair and just. Similarly, in matters of faith, by reflecting on the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can deepen our understanding of Islam and strengthen our relationship with Allah.
The consequences of following Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice are manifold. By actively facing issues and perceiving them, we become more aware of our surroundings, more empathetic towards others, and more equipped to make informed decisions. This leads to personal growth, improved relationships, and a greater sense of purpose in life.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us the importance of actively facing and engaging with the issues of life. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding and perception of the world around us. This requires reflection, contemplation, and seeking knowledge from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). May Allah grant us the wisdom and insight to apply this valuable lesson in our lives.
