اَلتَّوْفِيقُ عِنايَةُ الرَّحْمنِ۔
God-given success is the favour [and special attention] of the Most Merciful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Given Success)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
God-given success is the favor [and special attention] of the Most Merciful.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement in light of the Quran.
The word (tawfiq) "تَوْفِيق" in Arabic refers to divine guidance, assistance, and success bestowed upon an individual by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a comprehensive term that encompasses both spiritual and worldly success. It is important to note that this success is not achieved solely through human effort, but rather it is a result of the favor and special attention of the Most Merciful.
The phrase (inayat al-Rahman) "عِنايَةُ الرَّحْمنِ" refers to the care, concern, and attention of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) towards His creation. It highlights the fact that success is not solely dependent on one's own abilities, but rather it is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and grace.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the concept of God-given success and the favor of the Most Merciful. For instance, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
This verse illustrates that even in the face of adversity and opposition, Allah's divine assistance and guidance are always present, leading to ultimate success.
Another verse that highlights the concept of God-given success is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
This verse emphasizes that true guidance and success come from Allah alone, and it is He who determines whom to guide and grant success.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound reality that success in all aspects of life, whether spiritual or worldly, is ultimately a result of Allah's favor and special attention. It reminds us that our efforts and abilities alone are insufficient without the divine assistance and guidance from the Most Merciful.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek Allah's help and guidance in all their endeavors. It encourages us to rely on Allah's mercy and grace, recognizing that true success is not achieved through mere human effort, but through the favor and special attention of the Most Merciful. It instills in us a sense of humility and gratitude, as we acknowledge that any success we achieve is ultimately a gift from Allah.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to align our actions and intentions with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By seeking Allah's help and guidance, and by following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble progeny, we can attain true success in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us His divine tawfiq and bless us with His favor and special attention. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in all our endeavors.
