People! There is no proof of Allah, the Glorified, on His earth greater than our Prophet, Muhammad (s), nor is there any wisdom more manifest than His book, the Glorious Qur’an and Allah, the Exalted, has not praised anyone from among you except he who holds fast to his rope and follows His prophet; and only he perishes, who perishes when he disobeys Him, goes against His commands and follows his vain desires. This is why the Almighty says ‘… let those who disobey His order beware lest an ordeal should afflict them or a painful chastisement befall them.’.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the unparalleled status of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Qur'an as the ultimate sources of guidance and wisdom. He states that there is no greater proof of Allah's existence and authority on earth than the Prophet Muhammad (), and no wisdom more manifest than the Qur'an.

The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has not praised anyone from among the people except those who hold fast to the rope of Allah, follow the Prophet (), and adhere to the teachings of Islam. This highlights the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger in order to attain success in this world and the Hereafter.

To support this exegesis, let us turn to the Qur'an for further clarification. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 31:

Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'

This verse emphasizes the significance of following the Prophet () as a means of attaining Allah's love and forgiveness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against following one's own desires and going against the commands of Allah and His Messenger. The verse states:

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their own desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse serves as a reminder that those who disobey Allah and His Messenger and follow their own whims and desires are misguided and prone to destruction.

The consequences of disobedience and following one's own desires are further emphasized in Surah An-Nur, verse 63:

Do not make the calling of the Messenger among you as your calling of one another. Allah knows those of you who slip away surreptitiously. So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.

This verse warns against deviating from the Prophet's () teachings and commands, as it can lead to trials and tribulations in this world and a painful punishment in the Hereafter.

Reflecting on this hadith and the supporting Qur'anic verses, we understand the importance of adhering to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Qur'an. It is through obedience to Allah and His Messenger that we can attain success and salvation. We must strive to hold fast to the rope of Allah, follow the Prophet's () example, and avoid following our own desires. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the pitfalls of disobedience and ensure our spiritual growth and well-being.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to understand and implement the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Qur'an in our lives. May He guide us on the straight path and protect us from the temptations of our own desires. Ameen.
