اَلْكافِرُ فاجِرٌ جاهِلٌ۔
The disbeliever is an immoral, ignorant person.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Disbeliever)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْكَافِرُ فَاجِرٌ جَاهِلٌ", which translates to
The disbeliever is an immoral, ignorant person.
This Hadith highlights two important characteristics of a disbeliever: immorality and ignorance.
Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the words used in this Hadith. The word (kafir) "كَافِرُ" refers to a person who denies or rejects the truth of Islam. It is derived from the root word (kafara) "كَفَرَ", which means to cover or conceal. Thus, a disbeliever is someone who covers or conceals the truth, choosing to reject it.
The word (fajir) "فَاجِرٌ" refers to a person who is immoral or wicked. It signifies someone who indulges in sinful and immoral acts, deviating from the path of righteousness. This term emphasizes the corrupt behavior and actions of a disbeliever.
Furthermore, the word (jahil) "جَاهِلٌ" refers to a person who is ignorant or lacking knowledge. It denotes someone who is unaware or uninformed about the teachings of Islam and the guidance of Allah. This ignorance leads to a lack of understanding and a deviation from the truth.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22),
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse highlights the importance of reason and understanding in the sight of Allah. A disbeliever who lacks knowledge and understanding is considered among the worst of creatures.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before passing judgment or taking action. Ignorance can lead to harmful consequences and regretful actions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for knowledge and understanding. It highlights the negative qualities of a disbeliever, emphasizing the importance of morality and knowledge in the path of Islam. A disbeliever who lacks morality and knowledge is far from the guidance of Allah and is prone to committing sinful acts.
As Muslims, we should reflect upon this Hadith and strive to increase our knowledge and understanding of Islam. By seeking knowledge and practicing morality, we can strengthen our faith and distance ourselves from the characteristics of a disbeliever. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge and follow the path of righteousness.
