(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ آخى في اللّهِ غَنِمَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who fraternizes for the sake of Allah, gains.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (akhā) "آخى" in this Hadith means to establish a bond of brotherhood or friendship. It signifies a deep connection and mutual support between individuals who share a common goal. The term (fi Allah) "في اللّهِ" emphasizes that this bond is formed solely for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure and following His commandments.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers.
This verse highlights the importance of unity and reconciliation among the believers. By establishing bonds of brotherhood for the sake of Allah, we can foster a sense of harmony and solidarity within the Muslim community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And enjoin upon one another truth and enjoin upon one another patience.
This verse emphasizes the mutual responsibility of Muslims to encourage and support one another in upholding the truth and practicing patience. By fraternizing for the sake of Allah, we can strengthen our collective resolve to adhere to the teachings of Islam and overcome challenges together.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we establish bonds of brotherhood for the sake of Allah, we gain numerous benefits. Firstly, such friendships are rooted in sincerity and selflessness, as they are not based on worldly gains or personal interests. This fosters a sense of trust and loyalty among believers, creating a strong foundation for enduring relationships.
Secondly, when we fraternize for the sake of Allah, we gain spiritual rewards and blessings. Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10) that those who establish brotherhood for His sake will receive His mercy and blessings. This divine favor elevates the status of believers and brings them closer to Allah.
Moreover, fraternizing for the sake of Allah enables us to fulfill our duty as members of the Muslim community. By supporting and uplifting one another, we contribute to the overall well-being and progress of the ummah. This unity and cooperation have the potential to bring about positive change and alleviate the challenges faced by Muslims worldwide.
Additionally, when we establish bonds of brotherhood for the sake of Allah, we gain a sense of purpose and fulfillment in our lives. The companionship and support of like-minded individuals who share our values and aspirations can provide us with the strength and motivation to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. This companionship becomes a source of inspiration and encouragement, enabling us to overcome obstacles and achieve success.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of fraternizing for the sake of Allah. By establishing bonds of brotherhood rooted in sincerity and selflessness, we gain spiritual rewards, blessings, and a sense of purpose. These relationships contribute to the unity and progress of the Muslim community, enabling us to navigate the challenges of life with steadfastness and resilience. May Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) grant us the ability to forge strong bonds of brotherhood for His sake and reap the benefits of such companionship.
