The ignorant person is one who is ignorant about his [own] affair.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الجاهِلُ مَنْ جَهِلَ أمْرَهُ
which translates to
The ignorant person is one who is ignorant about his [own] affair.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-awareness and knowledge of one's own affairs.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "الجاهِلُ" refers to the ignorant person, someone who lacks knowledge or understanding. "مَنْ جَهِلَ" means
one who is ignorant,
emphasizing the state of being unaware or uninformed. Finally, "أمْرَهُ" refers to one's own affair or matter, encompassing all aspects of an individual's life, including their beliefs, actions, and responsibilities.
This Hadith is in perfect harmony with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the significance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who remain ignorant. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding to attain a higher level of consciousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse encourages Muslims to verify information and not act upon it blindly. It emphasizes the need to seek knowledge and understanding before making judgments or taking actions that may have negative consequences.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly strive for self-awareness and knowledge. It urges us to reflect upon our own affairs and seek understanding in order to make informed decisions. Ignorance can lead to detrimental consequences, both in this world and the hereafter.
For example, a person who is ignorant about the teachings of Islam may unknowingly engage in actions that are forbidden or harmful. They may lack awareness of their responsibilities towards Allah, their fellow human beings, and the environment. This ignorance can lead to a life filled with mistakes, regrets, and missed opportunities for growth and righteousness.
On the other hand, a person who seeks knowledge and understanding of their own affairs is empowered to make informed choices. They are aware of their duties as Muslims and strive to fulfill them to the best of their abilities. They have a deeper understanding of their purpose in life and are motivated to live in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
The ignorant person is one who is ignorant about his [own] affair,
serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge and understanding of their own lives. It urges us to reflect upon our beliefs, actions, and responsibilities, and to strive for self-awareness in order to make informed decisions. By doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and lead a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial to ourselves and others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and understanding in all aspects of our lives.
