مَنْ عَيَّرَ بِشَيْء بُلِيَ بِهِ۔
Whoever taunts others for something is himself affected by it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taunting)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
مَنْ عَيَّرَ بِشَيْء بُلِيَ بِهِ۔
This can be translated into English as:
Whoever taunts others for something is himself affected by it.
Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (ayyara) "عَيَّرَ" means to criticize, mock, or taunt someone. It refers to the act of belittling or demeaning others for a certain quality or characteristic. The word (buliya) "بُلِيَ" is derived from the root word (bala) "بَلَى", which means to be afflicted or affected by something. It signifies that the person who engages in taunting or mocking others will himself be affected by the same quality or characteristic.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from ridiculing or mocking others. It reminds us that we should not judge others based on superficial qualities or characteristics, as they may possess virtues and qualities that are superior to our own. By taunting or belittling others, we not only engage in disrespectful behavior, but we also expose ourselves to the consequences of our actions.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Humazah (104:1-3):
Woe to every scorner and mocker, who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
These verses highlight the arrogance and delusion of those who mock and taunt others. Such individuals become preoccupied with their worldly possessions and believe that their wealth will grant them immortality. However, they fail to realize that their actions have consequences and that they will ultimately be held accountable for their behavior.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to refrain from engaging in harmful speech and actions. It teaches us the importance of treating others with respect and dignity, regardless of their perceived shortcomings. By taunting or mocking others, we not only harm them but also invite negative consequences upon ourselves.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see that it encourages us to cultivate empathy, compassion, and humility. It reminds us to focus on our own self-improvement rather than seeking faults in others. By doing so, we can foster a harmonious and inclusive society where individuals are valued for their character and actions rather than being judged based on superficial qualities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of refraining from taunting or mocking others. It reminds us that our words and actions have consequences and that we should strive to treat others with respect and dignity. By embodying the values of empathy, compassion, and humility, we can create a more harmonious and inclusive society, in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the path of righteousness and grant us the wisdom to understand and implement these teachings in our lives.
