Hadith #2324

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المعروف حسب", which translates to "Benevolence is distinction." This concise statement holds deep meaning and significance, shedding light on the importance of performing acts of kindness and goodness towards others.

The word "ma'ruf" in this Hadith refers to acts of goodness, kindness, and righteousness. It encompasses all actions that are recognized as virtuous and beneficial in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It includes acts such as charity, helping those in need, showing compassion, and fulfilling one's responsibilities towards others.

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.

This verse highlights that true righteousness is not merely limited to rituals or outward displays of piety. It encompasses belief in Allah and His messengers, as well as the practical manifestation of this belief through acts of charity and kindness towards those in need. By doing so, one distinguishes themselves as a person of virtue and righteousness.

Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility and distinction in the sight of Allah is not based on one's lineage, wealth, or social status. Rather, it is determined by one's righteousness and piety. Those who consistently engage in acts of goodness and kindness towards others are considered noble and distinguished in the eyes of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, "Benevolence is distinction," serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize acts of kindness and righteousness in their lives. By embodying the spirit of benevolence, we not only fulfill our duty towards our fellow human beings but also earn the pleasure and distinction in the sight of Allah.
