— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and immaculate progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل إنصاف" which translates to "Justice is equity" in English. This concise statement holds profound wisdom and carries a deep message for all Muslims.

The word (adl) "عدل" in Arabic refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It signifies the act of giving each person their due rights and treating them with equality. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized in both the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is described as (Al-'Adl) "عَدْلٌ", the Just, in the Quran (Surah Al-Hadid, 57:25).

To understand the significance of justice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.

This verse highlights the importance of upholding justice even in difficult circumstances and regardless of personal biases.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.

This verse reminds us that justice should not be compromised due to personal feelings or biases. It is a duty upon every Muslim to strive for justice, even if it goes against our own interests or the interests of those we may dislike.

Imam Ali's statement, "Justice is equity," emphasizes the importance of treating others fairly and equally. It reminds us that justice is not merely a legal concept, but a moral and ethical principle that should guide our actions in all aspects of life. Justice requires us to give everyone their due rights, regardless of their social status, wealth, or background.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his deep understanding of justice and his commitment to upholding it. His famous quote,

People are of two types: either your brothers in faith or your equals in humanity,

reflects his belief in the inherent dignity and equality of all individuals. He treated people with fairness and impartiality, regardless of their social standing, and his actions serve as a shining example for Muslims to follow.

The consequences of justice are far-reaching. When justice is upheld, it leads to social harmony, peace, and the establishment of a just society. Conversely, the absence of justice breeds oppression, inequality, and discord. By practicing justice in our daily lives, we contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's statement, "Justice is equity," we are reminded of the importance of fairness and equality in our interactions with others. We should strive to treat everyone with justice, regardless of their background, and ensure that we do not let personal biases cloud our judgment. Upholding justice is not only a religious duty but also a moral obligation that contributes to the well-being of society as a whole.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be just and fair in all our dealings and grant us the wisdom to understand the true essence of justice. Ameen.
