سُوءُ الجَوارِ والإساءَةُ إلَى الأبْرارِ مِنْ أعْظَمِ اللُّؤمِ۔
Being a bad neighbour and offending the virtuous are the worst forms of vileness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Neighbours)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
سُوءُ الجَوارِ والإساءَةُ إلَى الأبْرارِ مِنْ أعْظَمِ اللُّؤمِ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the severity of two actions: being a bad neighbor and offending the virtuous. Let us delve into the meaning of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The term "سُوءُ الجَوارِ" refers to being a bad neighbor. It encompasses actions that harm or cause inconvenience to those living nearby. This includes noise pollution, trespassing, lack of consideration for others' privacy, and any behavior that disrupts the peace and harmony of the community. The word "إساءَةُ" means offending or mistreating, and "الأبْرارِ" refers to the virtuous individuals who strive to uphold righteousness and goodness.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of good neighborly relations in several verses. In Surah Al-Nisa (4:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side.
This verse highlights the significance of treating neighbors with kindness and respect, regardless of their proximity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Muslims,
And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse reminds us to cooperate in righteousness and piety, which includes treating our neighbors with kindness and avoiding any form of aggression or harm towards them.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the gravity of these actions by describing them as "أعْظَمِ اللُّؤمِ," meaning the worst forms of vileness. This statement emphasizes the severity of being a bad neighbor and mistreating the virtuous. It serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships with those around us, especially our neighbors.
Being a bad neighbor not only disrupts the peace and tranquility of the community but also reflects poorly on the character of the individual. It creates an environment of animosity and discord, which goes against the teachings of Islam. On the other hand, mistreating the virtuous individuals who strive to uphold righteousness and goodness is an act of injustice and ingratitude.
By reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to introspect and evaluate their behavior towards their neighbors and virtuous individuals. It serves as a reminder to be considerate, compassionate, and respectful towards others, fostering a sense of unity and harmony within the community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the severity of being a bad neighbor and mistreating the virtuous. It reminds Muslims of the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships and treating others with kindness and respect. By adhering to these teachings, we can create a society that is built on compassion, justice, and righteousness, reflecting the true essence of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be good neighbors and virtuous individuals.
