اَلْعِلْمُ عِزٌّ، اَلطّاعَةُ حِرْزٌ۔
Knowledge is honour, obedience is [a] refuge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العِلْمُ عِزٌّ، الطّاعَةُ حِرْزٌ۔
This thought-provoking saying can be translated as,
Knowledge is honour, obedience is [a] refuge.
Let us delve into the depths of this Hadith and explore its meanings in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us reflect upon the word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ". Knowledge is a vast and encompassing concept that includes both religious and worldly knowledge. It is the light that illuminates the path of a believer, guiding them towards righteousness and success. The acquisition of knowledge is highly encouraged in Islam, as it is a means of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Allah says in the Quran (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse emphasizes the superiority of knowledge and highlights its significance in the eyes of Allah.
Next, let us explore the word (honour) "عِزٌّ". Knowledge brings honor and dignity to an individual. It elevates their status in society and grants them respect and recognition. This honor is not derived from worldly possessions or material wealth, but rather from the deep understanding and wisdom that comes with knowledge. Allah says in the Quran (58:11),
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah.
Moving on to the second part of the Hadith, we come across the word (obedience) "طّاعَةُ". Obedience refers to submission and compliance with the commands of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). It is an essential aspect of faith and a means of seeking Allah's pleasure. Obedience acts as a shield, protecting us from the harms and temptations of this world. Allah says in the Quran (4:59),
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.
This verse highlights the importance of obedience and emphasizes its role in safeguarding our faith.
Lastly, let us reflect upon the word (refuge) "حِرْزٌ". Obedience acts as a refuge for a believer, providing them with protection and security. It shields them from the evils of disobedience and guides them towards righteousness. By obeying the commands of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), a Muslim finds solace and tranquility in their heart. Allah says in the Quran (22:77),
O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good - that you may succeed.
This verse highlights the connection between obedience and success, indicating that obedience is a refuge that leads to prosperity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully encapsulates the significance of knowledge and obedience in the life of a believer. Knowledge brings honor and dignity, while obedience acts as a refuge and shield. By seeking knowledge and obeying the commands of Allah, Muslims can attain both worldly success and spiritual elevation. May Allah grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge and the strength to be obedient, so that we may attain honor and refuge in this world and the Hereafter.
