(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he defines the qualities of a true friend. The Arabic word (sadiq) "صَدِيق" refers to a sincere and genuine friend, someone who is loyal and trustworthy. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that a true friend is one who not only advises against injustice and wrongdoing but also actively supports and encourages righteousness and acts of kindness.

To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the Quranic verses that shed light on the importance of forbidding injustice and promoting righteousness.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9):

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the obligation to stand against oppression and injustice. A true friend, as described by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is one who not only recognizes and condemns injustice but also takes action to rectify the situation. Such a friend is a source of support and guidance, helping others to uphold justice and fairness.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2):

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse emphasizes the importance of cooperation in acts of righteousness and piety. A true friend, as described by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is one who actively supports and encourages others in performing good deeds and striving for righteousness. They are a source of motivation and inspiration, guiding others towards the path of righteousness and goodness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that a true friend is not only concerned with personal well-being but also with the well-being of others. They strive to prevent injustice and wrongdoing, while simultaneously promoting acts of kindness and righteousness. Such a friend is a blessing in one's life, as they provide guidance, support, and encouragement in the pursuit of goodness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified these qualities throughout his life. His unwavering commitment to justice, his profound wisdom, and his unparalleled knowledge make him a role model for all Muslims. He stood against oppression and tyranny, and he actively promoted acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of surrounding ourselves with true friends who have these qualities. We should strive to be that true friend to others, advising against injustice and wrongdoing, while actively supporting and encouraging acts of goodness and righteousness.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be true friends to one another, and may He bless us with the guidance to always stand against injustice and promote righteousness.
