Hadith #5277

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "سَبَبُ المَزيدِ الشُّكْرُ۔" which translates to

The cause of increment is gratitude.

This concise statement holds deep wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.

Let us first analyze the key words in this Hadith. The word (mazid) "مَزِيد" means increase or increment, indicating that gratitude leads to an increase in blessings and favors from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (shukr) "شُكْر" means gratitude or thankfulness, which refers to expressing appreciation and recognizing the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse clearly emphasizes the importance of gratitude and its direct correlation with an increase in blessings from Allah. When we express gratitude for the blessings we have been given, Allah promises to bestow upon us even more favors. This shows the immense mercy and generosity of our Creator.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Naml (27:40), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, 'Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed Allah, over all things, is competent.'

This verse reminds us to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation and His continuous blessings in the world around us. When we observe the beauty and intricacy of nature, we are reminded of the countless blessings bestowed upon us. Gratitude allows us to recognize and appreciate these blessings, leading to an increase in our faith and spiritual growth.
