(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The remembrance of Allah is nourishment for the souls and [being in] the company of the [most] Beloved.

This enlightening Hadith highlights the importance of two key aspects in the spiritual journey of a Muslim: the remembrance of Allah and the company of the beloved.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (dhikr) "ذِكْرُ" refers to the remembrance of Allah, which encompasses various forms of worship, such as reciting the Quran, engaging in supplications, and praising Allah. It is through the remembrance of Allah that our souls find nourishment and tranquility. Just as our bodies require sustenance to function properly, our souls require the remembrance of Allah to thrive and attain spiritual fulfillment.

The word (quwwah) "قُوتُ" translates to nourishment or strength. When we engage in the remembrance of Allah, our souls are revitalized and fortified. This nourishment provides us with the spiritual strength to overcome challenges, resist temptations, and maintain a strong connection with our Creator. Allah affirms the significance of remembrance in the Quran, stating in Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62:10),

And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being in the company of the Beloved. The word (mujalasatu) "مُجالَسَةُ" refers to companionship or association. In this context, it signifies being in the company of Allah, the Most Beloved. This companionship can be achieved through engaging in acts of worship, seeking knowledge, and surrounding ourselves with righteous individuals who inspire us to draw closer to Allah.

The Quran provides numerous examples of the significance of seeking the company of the Beloved. In Surah Al-Kahf (18:28), Allah says,

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.

Being in the company of those who remember Allah and strive to please Him is a means of spiritual growth and guidance.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we understand that the remembrance of Allah and seeking His company are intertwined. The remembrance of Allah strengthens our souls, enabling us to better appreciate and benefit from the company of the Beloved. Conversely, being in the company of the Beloved enhances our remembrance of Allah, deepening our connection with Him.

The consequences of practicing the teachings of this Hadith are profound. When we prioritize the remembrance of Allah and seek His company, our hearts are filled with tranquility, our actions are guided by righteousness, and our souls find solace. We become more conscious of our Creator in our daily lives, and our relationship with Him becomes more intimate and meaningful.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of the remembrance of Allah and the company of the Beloved. By engaging in the remembrance of Allah, our souls find nourishment and strength. And by seeking the company of the Beloved, we deepen our connection with Allah and experience spiritual growth. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him constantly and seek His company, so that our souls may find true nourishment and our lives may be filled with His blessings.
