اَلْحَسَدُ شَرُّ الأمْراضِ۔
Jealousy is the worst of diseases.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Jealousy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحسد شر الأمراض" which translates to
Jealousy is the worst of diseases.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of jealousy and its detrimental impact on individuals and society as a whole.
Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran. The word (al-hasad) "الحسد" refers to the feeling of envy or jealousy towards someone's blessings, possessions, or achievements. It is a negative emotion that stems from discontentment with one's own situation and a desire to possess what others have been blessed with.
The word (sharr) "شر" means evil or harm. Thus, the Hadith teaches us that jealousy is not only a negative emotion but also a destructive force that can cause great harm to individuals and communities. It is like a disease that eats away at the heart and soul, leading to resentment, animosity, and even malicious actions.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the dangers of jealousy and its detrimental effects on individuals and society. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Nisa (4:54),
Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.
This verse highlights the futility of jealousy, as everything we possess is ultimately a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:76), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, 'Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.'
This verse highlights the story of Qarun, who was consumed by jealousy and arrogance due to his wealth and possessions. His jealousy led to his downfall and the punishment of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The consequences of jealousy are not limited to the individual experiencing it. Jealousy can lead to a toxic and divisive environment within families, communities, and even nations. It breeds resentment, competition, and a lack of unity. It hinders personal growth and prevents individuals from appreciating their own blessings and achievements.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of cultivating contentment and gratitude in our hearts. Instead of being envious of others, we should focus on improving ourselves and seeking Allah's blessings through sincere efforts and supplication. We should celebrate the success and blessings of others, for their achievements do not diminish our own.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of jealousy. It is a disease that can corrupt the heart and soul, leading to harm and discord. By reflecting on the teachings of the Quran and the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to overcome jealousy and cultivate a spirit of contentment, gratitude, and unity within ourselves and our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the evils of jealousy and grant us the strength to celebrate the blessings of others.
